In other words, sinfulness is considered a property of human nature after the fall. Thus, it must be concluded that we are all born sinners, since we are all born human and sin is regarded as a property of humanity. In this vein, consider Ephesians 2:1-3:

And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Thus, all people, until and unless they are converted, are sinners. Paul goes on to make it absolutely clear that all Christians came from this state (“…we to all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh”) and that all non-Christians are still in this state (“…and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest.”) Thus, Scripture regards all people before they are saved by Christ as sinners and thus deserving of punishment from God. Which is to say that from the inception of our existence, we are sinful.

If it were possible to be without sin, then Jesus would not have had to go through what he did. If we believe in what Jesus did, then we must believe we are all sinners, which the Bible clearly says we are. Ecclesiastes 7:20, 1 John 1;8, Adam introduced sin & thereby brought about spiritual & physical death for him & all generations to come. This is both spiritual & genetic. It is the result of his sin. Romans 7 makes it clear that we’re all of sinful nature. If we weren’t, there would be no need for redemption. That gives us the new nature. To be without sin, you must first be born of God, not man. Accepting Christ is the only way to not be a slave to sin.
It is also convoluted with regard to a fallacious basis from which the OP’s final argument is made. More or less, the argument that is insinuated it this: I am not in need of questioning my doctrinal position because I’ve been busy at church. And further, I am also justified in not listening to your challenge because you have NOT been busy at my church.

The biases in play here are numerous.

There is no lack of intelligence in play, however. This person is plenty intelligent to understand my arguments. In fact, she probably makes similarly-sound arguments to others on OTHER doctrinal points about which she happens to be correct (by which I mean that she doesn’t use scripture to contradict other scripture).

I think that this manner of dysrationalia in modern Christianity is rampant. Ironically, to a great many, it does not seem to be about arriving at the truth at all, but about something else. And what a pity this is.

A couple of months ago, I decided I’d keep track along the way of individuals in our generation who claim to be prophets. I happened upon a surprising claim this week from an Astrophysicist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson. While he did not claim to be a prophet of God in the fashion that many religious people do, I was intrigued that he claims to have been “called by the Universe”.

Here is the excerpt you will find in the embedded YouTube video at roughly 00:00:45 – 00:01:17:

“I wanted to become an astrophysicist not because I chose it; in a way, the Universe chose me. …. I was called by the Universe. I had no choice in the matter.” (See it in the video below.)

I find this interesting because the scientist is most likely waxing metaphoric, as if to say that “It was as if the Universe were calling to me.” If this is how humans tend to think about their own experiences—even highly-trained thinkers such as Tyson—then is it any wonder that average citizens tend to wax imaginary about their “callings” from God? Is it any wonder that so very many people fancy themselves to have a “relationship with God” even though they know full well that there is nothing typical about that “relationship”? That is, they talk to God but God doesn’t talk back. They ask for things and often don’t get anything that can even be imagined to be a response from God. They cannot make a phone call to reach him as they do with their other relationships, and he doesn’t reply to email. Yet even so, they imagine a “relationship” with him just the same. And here we have the famous Astrophysicist engaging in something of the same general sort, it seems.

How interesting.

If the Universe can call an astrophysicist and a table can give Wayne Dyer the words for a book, perhaps the preachers claiming prophecy ought at least to be recognized as belonging to a larger group of humans doing the same thing—-however unreal those claims may be.

I’ve learned through experience that people who say the following are not likely to be highly-authentic people.

“To be honest…” or “To tell the truth…” Whenever I hear this, I always wonder why it is at that particular point in the conversation that this phrase comes out. Was the person lying before this point in the conversation? And if not, why is it important to affirm to me that he is not lying now? Has he suddenly become untrustworthy in the middle of a conversation? And if not to me, why to himself? Or is he just a cognitive miser who repeats this phrase because he has heard it from others, and without regard to whatever it is supposed to mean or what it might tend to convey (or to betray, even)? None of these possibilities speak well of his personal authenticity.

“In my humble opinion…” Listen, son: If you have to tell me that your opinion is humble, I think you’ve missed the point of humility already. Just what are you trying to do here? Keep me from wondering about your humility by assuring me ahead of time that there couldn’t possibly be anything to worry about? If that’s the case, you’re doing exactly the opposite by bringing it up.

“Just my two cents worth.“ If it’s only worth two cents, why did you type a page and a half to say it, calling my honor into question several times? It’s fairly obvious that you think your opinion in the matter is a work of great beauty, yet you pretend to be humble about it with this anticlimactic retreat. And I’m supposed to respect you for it. Somehow.

“Can’t we all just get along?” No, we can’t—not unless those of us who have conflicting convictions pretend that we do not. And in that case, we would simply be pretending that we are getting along, now, wouldn’t we? I know you well enough to know that you are not asking that we all roll up our sleeves and get down to the business of developing the same convictions all around, based honestly on fact and logic. No, you simply want to avoid obvious conflict. You’d rather not hear it, so that you can keep pretending the world is simpler than it really is.

“Well, that may be, but I prefer to believe that…” OK, so you acknowledge the fact but choose to remain incorrigible in the face of it.

“Well, I’ve always heard that…” What follows this phrase is almost always un-vetted hearsay. And it’s quite often wrong. Why not rather say, “I’ve studied this and my conclusion is…“? Or even, “I have no idea if this is true or not, but here’s what I’ve always heard…”? Well, that’s the stuff of which authentic people make themselves. But the hearsay artist is quite content to flit about on the currents of popular opinion without ever casting an anchor to see whether the solid bottom can be hooked into.

The primary goals of belief should be the pursuit of and participation in reality.

Always remember that reality is neither dependent upon nor created by beliefs. No amount of believing can make any untrue thing true.

Belief in things for which solid proof is not available should always be held as tenuous by the one believing.

Since believing is easier than proving, belief can be a trap for the cognitive miser.

It is no virtue to hold firmly to a belief in unreality.

It is no virtue to be right for the wrong reasons. The proof of a belief should be consistent with fact, logic, and sourcing.

To reject another’s beliefs simply because they differ from one’s own beliefs is to be unreasonable. The best objection is that which is offered along with a disproof.

It is no virtue to reject a belief without examining it.

One’s beliefs should be regularly re-examined for accuracy. The longer a belief persists without re-examination, the more likely it is to be erroneous.

Not all hunches are wrong. Nor are all of them right. Reality can sometimes be well depicted by beliefs, even though a formal proof of that reality has not been developed in the mind. The unconscious mind is certainly capable of developing such a “hunch” based on information already received. The greater the diligence of study and the scrutiny of available information, the more likely the belief is to jibe with reality, but oversights and biases can lead to erroneous beliefs.

Not all of reality is provable. There is, therefore, room in the world for belief.

Belief has its practicalities, even though not everything is certain. Even a bridge that has held for a million crossings may fail on the next attempt. Without “belief” in the bridge’s soundness, however, no one would ever cross.
